HOW IT WORKS

The LEGO® Build Competition will be held on each Monday at The AIA Carnival (with the exception of the 'Family Day' bonus session) with times, dates and themes above.
Each week one team will be declared winners and entered into the Grand Finale.
In the last week of The AIA carnival will host the grand final build competition where the team winners will build a final piece, and the ultimate AIA Carnival Young LEGO® Champions team will be declared.
Prizes will be given each week to the winning team and the ultimate Champions will receive the Grand Prize.
The theme for each week is outlined in the schedule above and entrants will have the choice to register their teams for a specific date.
The entry will be based on first come first served. Ages are for children 8-14 and the maximum per team is 4 people. The exception is Week 3 – 'Family Day', where entry is for teams of family members.

Note: the two hour time slot allows for set up and judging. Maximum build time is up to 1 hour per team.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The judging criteria will be transparent for students to compete fairly and include the following pillars:

Creativity & Originality (20 points)

How unique and imaginative is the team's LEGO® structure?
Does it showcase creative problem-solving and an innovative design approach?
To what extent does the structure embody and interpret the given theme in a novel way?

Structural Integrity (15 points)

Is the LEGO® structure sturdy, well-balanced, and able to withstand gentle handling?
How effectively have the team utilised LEGO® building techniques to create a stable, cohesive design?
Does the structure demonstrate an understanding of engineering principles?

Thematic Interpretation (20 points)

How well does the LEGO® structure capture and convey the assigned theme?
Are there clear, meaningful connections between the design elements and the theme?
Does the structure tell a compelling story or evoke a strong emotional response related to the theme?

Teamwork & Collaboration (20 points)

How effectively did the team work together to plan, build, and present their structure?
Did all team members contribute meaningfully and demonstrate cooperative problem-solving?
Was the team able to overcome any challenges or conflicts in a constructive manner?

Presentation & Communication (15 points)

How clearly and confidently did the team present and explain their LEGO® structure to the judges?
Did they highlight the key features, creative choices, and thematic connections in a concise, engaging way?
Did the team demonstrate enthusiasm, pride, and a genuine passion for their creation?

Visual Impact (10 points)

How visually striking and attention-grabbing is the team's LEGO® structure?
Does the structure have a strong, cohesive aesthetic that complements the given theme?
Is the overall design visually balanced, with thoughtful use of colour, scale, and composition?

Having a clear set of criteria will allow the judges to holistically evaluate the teams' LEGO® structures using the 4 C’s in education (creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration). It's a great way to foster a spirit of friendly competition and meaningful learning for these primary school participants.

At 7pm on the 10th February, 2025 the Grand Prize Winner will be revealed through a judging panel from The Promoter and LEGO®.

Terms & Conditions will be published online and through a scannable QR code at the AIA Carnival.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Eligibility:

The competition is open to teams of 4 children aged 8-14 years old, with the exception of Week 3 which is a family-themed competition.
Participants must reside in the local area and provide proof of residence upon request.
Children cannot participate in more than one team per week.
Immediate family members of AIA Carnival organisers and judges are not eligible to compete.
Each child team member can also bring up to two additional guests (carers/parents/friends) to watch the competition. These additional guests will be granted free access to the AIA Carnival.

Registration:

Teams must pre-register for their desired competition date online or on-site at the AIA Carnival information booth.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 10 teams per competition timeslot.
Registration closes 3 days prior to the competition date or when all spots are filled, whichever comes first.
At least one parent/guardian must be present to provide consent and contact information for each team.

Competition Guidelines:

Teams will be provided with a standard LEGO® brick set and given 1 hour to build their structure based on the weekly theme.
Use of personal LEGO® bricks or external materials is not permitted.
Team members must work collaboratively and each team member must participate in the build
Judges' decisions are final, and no appeals will be accepted.
AIA Carnival reserves the right to photograph, video, and use images of participants and their LEGO® structures for promotional purposes.

Prizes:

Weekly winning teams will receive a LEGO® box set prize as selected by the Promoter and have their structure displayed in the LEGO® showcase.
The Grand Prize winner of the final competition on 10th February 2025 will receive a LEGO® box set as selected by the Promoter.

Family Day Participation:

In addition to the standard competition, Week 3 will feature a special "Family Day" event.
Teams must be composed of at least one child (between 8-14 years old) and one parent/guardian.
Each team can also bring up to two additional guests (family members or friends) to watch the competition. These additional guests will be granted free access to the Family Day event.
The Family Day competition will follow the same guidelines and judging criteria as the other weekly events, but with a focus on highlighting the collaboration and creativity of families working together. This special session is intended to foster intergenerational bonding and encourage families to participate in the LEGO® building experience as a group.
Please note that the Family Day participants will not be eligible for the Grand Finale competition on February 10th. Their participation is limited to the Week 3 event only.
The winning entrant will receive one LEGO® box set as selected by the Promoter for the family.

Conduct:

Teams are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect for others, and follow all instructions from AIA Carnival staff.
Any disruptive, unethical, or unsafe behaviour may result in disqualification at the organisers' discretion.
AIA Carnival is not responsible for any loss, damage, or injury that may occur during the competition.

By registering for the AIA Carnival LEGO® Build Competition, participants and their guardians agree to abide by these Terms & Conditions.

All those partaking in the competition accept and agree that the AIA Carnival may take and use your photographs or images for commercial purposes.
